TANZANIA DAY TRIPS
MKOMAZI NP DAY TRIP
The Mkomazi National Park is situated in the northern region of Tanzania, nestled between Moshi and Tanga. Its location offers a breathtaking backdrop, with the imposing Pare and Usambara mountains towering over its boundaries. On clear days, the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro can also be spotted from within the park’s expanse.
The park is characterized by a unique landscape, marking the southern edge of the Sahel zone. This region exhibits a dry and desert-like environment, predominantly covered in acacia-commiphora woodlands. As one ventures towards the western mountains, the scenery transitions into a dry land forest, adding to the park’s diverse ecosystem.
Umba River, flowing from the southeast, serves as the primary water source for Mkomazi National Park. This river sustains the park’s wildlife, especially during dry seasons when precipitation is scarce. Embarking on game drives along the river area promises rewarding sightings of the park’s diverse fauna
Mkomazi is renowned for being a sanctuary for endangered species, notably the elusive black rhinoceros. Wildlife enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to encounter endangered wild dogs, alongside a plethora of other captivating species. Among these are giraffes, elands, hartebeests, zebras, buffaloes, elephants, and the elegant long-necked gerenuk.
Birdwatching enthusiasts will be delighted by the park’s rich avian diversity, boasting over 450 recorded species. Endemic treasures such as the cobalt-chested vulturine guinea-fowl grace the skies, while impressive ground-dwelling birds like the ostrich, kori bustard, secretary bird, and ground hornbill add to the avian spectacle. Migratory species, including the Eurasian roller, also frequent the park, making it a paradise for bird spotting enthusiasts.
